The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center has released its 2023 report on cybercrime, looking at online scams affecting people.The report says more people are reporting crimes, and losses across the country grew to $12.6 billion in 2023. That is up from $10.3 billion in 2022. More than 880,000 people filed complaints last year.In Maine, total losses were just under $19 million with more than 1,600 people falling victim. In terms of total complaints, Maine ranks 47th out of 57 states and territories. In total losses, Maine ranks 49th.In terms of complaints per capita, Maine ranks 39th with 116.5. For losses per capita, Maine comes in at number 49.People over the age of 60 lost the most money to cybercrime in 2023, with people in that age bracket losing $7.1 million.Tech support and BEC (business email compromise) scams cost Mainers the most money, according to the report. The report says investment-related scams are also on the rise in Maine. “Today’s cyber landscape is threatened by a multitude of malicious actors who have the tools to conduct large-scale fraud schemes, hold our money and data for ransom, and endanger our national security. Profit-driven cybercriminals and nation-state adversaries alike have the capability to paralyze entire school systems, police departments, healthcare facilities, and individual private sector entities” wrote Timothy Langan, FBI Executive Assistant Director.
