A Racine County man charged with knowingly committing election fraud had his initial court appearance Thursday. Harry Wait, 68, of Union Grove, told WISN 12 News Reporter Nick Bohr that he’d “do it again in a heartbeat.”Wait represented himself at the hearing in Racine County Court. He filed several motions ahead of time objecting to the charges. Wait also spoke outside of the courthouse. “Today begins my journey into justice to see if the rule of law is upheld,” he said in the minutes before the hearing began, surrounded by about two dozen supporters.”Today the state calls me a criminal, just as Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and the list goes on and on and on,” Wait said. Wait arrived 10 minutes late to his initial court appearance, blaming it on an erroneous subpoena. As he began to explain, Judge Robert Repischak firmly told Wait to “sit down.” Supporters, including former candidate for governor Rep. Tim Ramthun, packed the courtroom, with some wearing shirts of support that quickly got the attention of the judge. “No! Out!,” Repischak shouted. “This is not a political rally, it’s a courtroom. Out.”Those wearing the shirts quickly left, returning later with the shirts turned inside-out. Wait represented himself at the hearing. He was granted release with a signature bond, which doesn’t require him to post any cash.He did object to an order prohibiting him from talking about the case with the media. “I think that your gag order is illegal,” Wait told the judge. “I think it’s against my First Amendment rights. I will assert my rights. As you well know. I’m asking the court to reconsider its gag order.” The judge simply answered, “No.”As Wait filed out of the courthouse, he was asked about the so-called gag order. “I will just pursue it. As I’ve said before victory favors the prepared. I came into this court, all guns blazing against…” But Wait abruptly stopped talking, seeming to catch himself. “I’ve already talked. I’ve gotta be quiet,” he said. The charges carry a maximum prison sentence of up to 13 years in prison. Wait’s next court date is a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 19.
