“Romance Scam” is a combination of “romance,” which means dating, and “scam,” which means credit fraud. It is a method of extorting money under the pretext of marriage after gaining favor with the opposite sex on social network services (SNS), and the damage is not even counted due to the low reporting characteristics.
Kim Sang-hyuk said in a video released on the YouTube channel “Namdari Mac” on the 8th that he went through a period of weakening himself last year and met someone in an online space at the time. Kim Sang-hyuk married Song Daye from Uljang in April 2019 after a two-year relationship, but divorced after a year and is living alone.
Kim Sang-hyuk said, “One day, someone sent me a message periodically. “Messaging became my leisure life,” he said, adding, “We communicated with each other as if we were pen pals.” Then, he said he would congratulate me on my birthday and asked if I was playing Bitcoin,” he said.
He said, “If you send US dollars to your wallet address, they will give you dividends. So I put in 1 million won, he said. “Since then, dividends have actually dropped to my account every six hours.” He added extra money to his friend’s words that he was turning around assets worth a total of 200 million won. Recently, the number of cases of “romance scams” that gain favor and steal money after approaching the opposite sex through SNS, blind dates, and chat apps has increased rapidly.
According to the National Intelligence Service on the 8th, 126 cases of romance cam damage were reported to the NIS 111 Center last year, the highest number ever reported. The amount of damage in 2021 was around 3.13 billion won, but as of October, it increased by 55% to 4.86 billion won.
Jeon Chung-jo, who was arrested and indicted after announcing the remarriage of Nam Hyun-hee, a former fencing national team member, was also found to have committed fraud by pretending to be a “rich woman in her 20s who wants to get married” in an instant meeting app and stealing money in the name of pregnancy and marriage costs.
