LUBBOCK, Texas — Three men accused of hacking into ATMs to steal money in Lubbock and throughout the Texas Panhandle area agreed to plead guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Bank Theft, federal documents showed on Thursday.
EverythingLubbock.com previously reported Abel Valdes, 38, Yordanesz Sanchez, 41, and Carlos Jordano Herrera-Ruiz, 33, were arrested on August 3 at a hotel in the 6600 block of I-27.
According to federal court documents, police received intelligence that a vehicle believed to be involved in “jackpotting” ATMs was seen in Lubbock.
“Jackpotting is an act where criminals deceive a free-standing ATM and gain access to all U.S. currency stores inside the ATM,” court documents stated. The Lubbock Police Department connected a jackpotting incident in Hereford to another at an EZ Mart Convenience Store in the Hub City, where more than $5,000 was illegally withdrawn.
According to court documents, the same vehicle in the Hereford incident was seen at the EZ Mart in Lubbock. Police eventually searched the hotel room the men were using and found multiple cellphones, fraudulent IDs, soldering equipment and a “Raspberry Pi” device, among other things.
The ATM jackpotting incidents were in Lubbock, Hereford, and in Amarillo. If their pleas are accepted, the three men will be sentenced at a later date to no more than 5 years in prison.
