The cybercrime wing of the Greater Chennai police (GCP) Tuesday arrested a man for allegedly posting objectionable content about DMK leaders on social media.
According to the police, based on a complaint filed by a resident of Raja Annamalai Puram in Chennai, a case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station on August 27. The complainant informed that he came across a post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 25 that had ‘objectionable comments’ and morphed images of Chief Minister M K Stalin and DMK Thoothukudi MP K Kanimozhi.

Following the complaint, the police conducted an inquiry and zeroed in on the X handle that had posted the ‘abusive’ content.

“On analysing the IP logs the linked mobile number was traced and found to be used by one M Velu. A special team was formed and Velu was arrested on October 17. The accused admitted to the offence of posting offensive message on Twitter (X),” a statement issued by the police reads.
The police seized the mobile phone used by the accused and produced him before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Tuesday. Velu, 54, has been remanded in judicial custody.
In a message, the police requested the public not to post or share false, misleading messages on social media. They further advised citizens to register their complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal – http://www.cybercrime.gov.in – for cybercrimes.
