Microsoft has released the big Windows 11 2022 update, which is now available for download for the first devices. The new update of the operating system comes up with numerous features and improvements.
Windows 11 2022 Update: The new features
About a year after the launch of the current Microsoft operating system, is available with the Windows 11 2022 update the first major update for download, as announced by the manufacturer. The rollout starts immediately in phases in over 190 countries and can be triggered via Windows Update in the settings.
The first major Windows 11 update focuses on four core aspects. It aims to make PCs and notebooks even easier and safer to use, improve productivity, expand Windows as a platform for networking, creativity and entertainment, and offer more flexibility and organization options for the hybrid workplace.
We present you the most important innovations of the Windows 11 2022 Update in detail.
New features in the Start menu
When it comes to the Start menu, the Windows 11 2022 update brings some interesting innovations. Here, for example, multiple apps can now be combined into folders, while the search function should work even faster and deliver more precise results.
The function to create tabs in the file explorer will also follow in October, while the new start page allows quick access to your favorite or most recently used files. Important files or documents can also be pinned, while information about other people’s actions on shared files is displayed instantly.
Also new are additional accessibility features. These include system-wide live subtitles, which can automatically generate subtitles for any form of audio content.
You can also use voice control to operate the PC or notebook and compose entire texts by voice input. Natural Voices for Narrator more accurately mirrors natural speech, which should make for more pleasant-sounding audio – albeit initially only in the US before the feature makes it to Europe.
New improvements for snap layouts and focus
The Windows 11 2022 Update also introduces enhancements to Snap Layouts that simplify multitasking within the operating system. With the new update, Snap layouts become more flexible and versatile with better touch navigation and the ability to lock down multiple browser tabs in Microsoft Edge.
In addition, focus sessions can be activated from now on, which reduce distractions while working. Do Not Disturb will mute notifications, while taskbar badges and app notifications in the Windows 11 taskbar will be disabled as long as you have this mode enabled.
Focus is also integrated directly into the Clock app and can be set with a timer, for example, to automatically switch back to normal mode after working hours and have all notifications displayed.
Other new features of the Windows 11 update
Video calls and conferences, in particular, are also expected to benefit from new AI-assisted camera and audio effects from Windows Studio. New features include Voice Focus, which suppresses background noise, Eye Contact, Automatic Framing and Background Blur.
Gamers will also be pleased with performance optimizations in Windows 11, which should further reduce latencies (i.e. input delays). For games in windowed mode, features like Auto HDR and variable refresh rate are now available.
The Windows 11 Android app store, which is offered together with Amazon and announced for Germany in May 2022, also starts its preview with the new update of the operating system, allowing Android apps to be obtained directly from the PC or notebook.
Smart App Control and other innovations
Another exciting new feature is the “Smart App Control” function. Available on new Windows 11 devices or new installations of Windows 11 Update 2022, Smart App Control (SAC for short) prevents untrusted apps, script files and malicious macros from running on Windows 11.
It’s based on the same AI as Windows Defender Application Control and is meant to provide additional security. So if you download unsafe files, SAC will ask again if you really want them on your PC, just to be on the safe side.
The new Microsoft Defender SmartScreen will also detect and warn you if you try to enter your Microsoft credentials in potentially malicious applications or on a compromised website.
More updates in October
The roll-out of the new Windows 11 2022 Update is far from over, however, as more features are to be added to Microsoft’s operating system at regular intervals.
Already in October 2022, you can expect a few more innovations. For example, a new gallery view for the Photos app, suggested actions for copying, with which you can, for example, directly make a call via Teams or transfer appointments to the calendar. How you can get the new Windows 11 update, Microsoft has also once again in a (English) blog post summarized.
