One week after school started in August, Volusia County Schools Director of Safety and Security Michelle Newman resigned, following former Superintendent Scott Fritz to work for the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County.

Now, the school district plans to replace Newman not with another school employee, but with a captain from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood visited the school board meeting Tuesday night to discuss the contract for his office to provide the district with a school safety specialist, which the board applauded and approved.
