Every year Google treats us to a refreshed version of its popular smartphone OS – Android. After Android 12 goes public somewhere in September, news and rumors of what to expect in Android 13 should start ramping up.
Still, even at a time when Android 12 is still in beta, we already have a few details of what to expect when its successor hits the ground.
Of course, we both know the first Android 13 build won’t show up until Q1 2022, so there’s plenty of time to speculate. But not everything in this article is speculation.
For instance, it’s a known fact that the likes of Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL as well as the newer Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are eligible for this update thanks to Google’s longer software support window.
We’ve also known for a while that LG has plans to bring Android 13 update to a few of its devices, at least the ones that saw it off during its last days.
Owners of the Vivo X60 series can also rest assured that Android 13 is coming their way. Of course, there are also plenty of Samsung devices in line for this update, but that’s a story for another day.
In this article, we focus more on what Google is looking to bake right into stock Android 13. We’ve already highlighted the potential plans of delivering Neural Networks API (NNAPI) updates via Google Play Services with Android 13.
Furthermore, XDA Developers recently revealed something even more interesting. Sure, Google stopped using desserts to publicly identify different OS versions with Android 9 Pie. But this practice lives on in-house.
The current Android 12 “S”, for instance, is known internally as Snow Cone. Apparently, Android 13 “T” is codenamed Tiramisu, which is a coffee-flavored dessert that hails from the home of UEFA EURO 2020 champions.
Upon further digging, the same XDA guys also established that with Android 13, eligible Google Pixel devices may allow secondary profiles to make NFC payments.
Despite having been around for quite some time, multi-user support has been missing the ability to configure NFC payments on secondary profiles. As per the report, this changes with Android 13 update.
But as noted, there’s still plenty of time between now and the official release of Android T, so yeah, a lot can change by the time the stable version arrives.
On the brighter side, we’ll be closely following all related developments and update this article accordingly whenever we bump into new and interesting stuff. Stay tuned.
Update 1 (August 26)
IST 12:14 pm: New reports now indicate that Google plans to expand support for UWB on the Pixel 6 going into Android 13 (Android T). This, according to a recent comment from Google to AOSP.
Update 2 (September 25)
IST 11:31 am: The folks over at XDA spotted a code change in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that suggests Google will add DNS over HTTPS support in Android 13.
Update 3 (December 14)
IST 03:18 pm: Google has reportedly submitted a patch to AOSP that adds an option to disable the monitoring of phantom processes.
This means Google may likely allow users to toggle on/off the Phantom Process Killer in Android 13. More on that here.
Update 4 (December 23)
IST 01:09 pm: New reports now suggest that Android 13 might just be the first release to add full support for Bluetooth LE Audio.
Update 5 (December 24)
IST 09:02 am: XDA has come out to offer us an exclusive first look at Android 13 that is apparently codenamed “Tiramisu”.
Some of the expected features in Android 13 include:
– Runtime Permission for Notifications
– TARE: The Android Resource Economy
– New Lock Screen Clock Layouts
– Support for Individual App Languages

Update 6 (December 29)
IST 11:23 am: Android 13 is still a pretty long way from now but development is pretty active and now, according to the lead on Google’s Nearby team, Android 13 will decouple WiFi scanning from location.
Update 7 (January 11)
IST 12:02 pm: The latest development on the upcoming Android 13 suggests that the Google is working on a feature called ‘Tap to transfer’.
And while it’s unknown as to how this feature will work, we do know that it will display chip notifications with some useful information when a user is playing media on a local media cast sender device. More on that here.
Google is also reportedly working on adding a QR scanner shortcut to the lock screen. There will be a QR code toggle in the quick access settings. For more info, head here.
Lastly, the reports also claim that Google will give a new look to the output picker in the Android 13 update. For those unaware, the output picker is the one that has audio controls and it is present as a button on the top right.
Update 8 (January 12)
04:14 pm (IST): Android 13 is said to bring a keyguard user switcher that will let you easily switch to a different user profile before unlocking it. More on that here.
Update 8 (January 13)
12:30 pm (IST): Google is seemingly upgrading Android 12’s dynamic theming system. According to the latest info (via Android Police), the company is preparing four new color combinations for dynamic theming with Android 13 update.
Also, as it’s already known that the Android 13 is said to add a setting for notification permission. And now we also know how it’s going to look as the UI for the notification permission feature is leaked.
Update 9 (January 15)
05:05 pm (IST): While trying to unravel a conversation of Google engineers, Mishaal Rahman pointed out that Google may not drop the source code of Android 13 with the betas.
“I am [of] the impression that once Android T is in public beta, the internal gerrit changes will be published [to] AOSP.”
This sentence caught my attention, but sadly, the Googler followed up with the correction, so we won’t get a source code drop with the Android 13 betas (Source)
However, the code will likely be released as early as August itself, according to a Google engineer. That’s at least a couple of months earlier than previous releases.
Update 10 (January 28)
10:48 am (IST): The devices launching with Android 13 may load games faster. Google is said to add a new API that will boost the CPU speed when it detects a game being launched. Hence, the games in Android 13 will load faster.
Update 11 (February 11)
10:29 am (IST): Google released the first developer preview of its upcoming Android 13 OS for eligible Pixel phones. DP 1 is focused on developers’ feedback and comes with new features, APIs, and behavior changes.
Moreover, Google also revealed the timeline of Android 13 which includes 2 Developer Previews and 4 betas until the OS reaches its stability. All these DPs and Beta updates will be released between February to July.
10:45 am (IST): Here are the features that Android 13 Developer Preview includes for the Pixel users.
– Quick Setting tiles for one-handed mode and color correction.
– Quick Setting tile for QR code scanner.
– The taskbar on large screen devices can show up to 6 icons compared to 5 on Android 12L.
– Redesigned media output picker.
– Added new foreground service manager with Quick Setting tile and tapping on it shows currently running app.
– Creating a guest profile lets you choose which app to be installed to that profile.
– The Android Resource Economy (TARE) has been added to Developer Options.
– Android 13 brings runtime permission for notifications.
– A toggle has been added in the three-button navigation settings that lets you disable ‘hold Home to invoke assistant’.
– The privacy dashboard shows which apps have accessed runtime permissions in the last 7 days instead of 24 hours.
– Silent mode will also disable the haptics.
– Split-screen button is added in the PiP mode.
– Per-app language preference feature is added but it’s turned off by default.

Update 12 (February 12)
11:23 am (IST): Google introduces a clipboard auto-clear feature that automatically deletes the primary clip from the global clipboard after a set time.
Moreover, Google has also added a ‘hub mode’ to Android 13, that allows apps to be shared on other devices such as tablets. The feature is currently in development. More on that here.
Update 13 (February 14)
10:49 am (IST): Google seems to have enhanced its Material You theming in Android 13. In Android 12 beta 3, the company added the dynamic theming system to home screen icons for its native app.
Now, taking a step further in Android 13, Google is also allowing third-party apps to use the Material You theming. More on that here.
Update 14 (February 15)
12:00 pm (IST): With Android 13, users will be able to run virtual machines with Windows and Linux on their smartphones with a better performance. More on that here.
Update 15 (February 16)
11:35 pm (IST): With Android 13, Google is seemingly making the Fast Pair feature available to other OEMs, including devices that ship without GMS.
Fast Pair automatically detects the nearby Bluetooth accessories and prompts users to quickly pair and set up the device.
Update 16 (February 17)
01:43 pm (IST): New devices launching with Android 13 will reportedly require special hardware to support mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) and digital IDs.
Moreover, the hardware should support Identity Credential Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) at feature version 202201 or later. More on that here.
Update 17 (February 24)
12:43 pm (IST): Previously, Google had plans to include DNS over HTTPS support in Android 13.
However, according to a new report, it looks like the company has now abandoned this feature and it likely won’t arrive with this Android version. More on that here.
Update 18 (March 01)
11:46 am (IST): Google may be planning to show a more user-friendly Android version name in Settings. Currently, the Android version is displayed as ‘Tiramisu’, as can be seen in the screengrab below.
Update 19 (March 02)
10:01 pm (IST): With Android 13, Google may allow users to adjust the brightness level of the flashlight. As of now, Android users can only toggle the LED flash on or off.
For what it’s worth, this feature has been available on iPhones and Samsung devices for years.
Update 20 (March 05)
03:45 pm (IST): Android 13 may include a feature for tablets called Hub Mode. It will allow users to share apps between profiles without requiring sign-in data or switching between profiles. More on that here.
Update 21 (March 15)
12:35 pm (IST): Google is yet to announce the runtime notification permission as an Android 13 feature. But it appears that this feature is already rolling out on Android, seemingly with the latest Chrome update.
Update 22 (March 17)
04:47 pm (IST): Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced on Twitter that the Google I/O 2022 event will be held between May 11 and 12 this year.
And Android 13 should be the main focus of this event which means Google will reveal more about its upcoming Android version.
Update 23 (March 18)
09:40 am (IST): Ahead of the May 11 I/O 2022 event, Google has announced Android 13 Developer Preview 2 for app developers.
Along with changes surrounding app compatibility, Privacy, and user trust, this build brings improvement for developer productivity and support for Bluetooth LE Audio and MIDI 2.0.

10:21 am (IST): Google will reportedly add a feature in Android 13 that will notify users whenever an app drains excessive battery in the background within 24 hours. More on that here.

06:36 pm (IST): Google is reportedly testing new user profile features that may arrive with Android 13. This includes a new profile picker button in the status bar that shows available profiles.
Moreover, there is a new full-screen user profile switcher for big-screen devices and an updated settings menu for creating new user profiles. More on that here.
Update 27 (March 23)
04:22 pm (IST): Google is reportedly working on a feature that will automatically enable dark theme at bedtime. This feature may arrive with Android 13 beta.
04:35 pm (IST): Google might bring some new Screen Saver changes with Android 13, probably before the beta ends or when the stable version arrives. More on that here.
04:45 pm (IST): The latest version of Repainter app (v1.2.0) brings support for Material You theming to unrooted Pixels on Android 13 DP2, Samsung devices running One UI 4.0 or higher, and every other rooted device.
Update 28 (March 24)
10:45 am (IST): Google is reportedly enhancing the search feature on Pixel launcher with Android 13. Users will be able to search for widgets, screenshots in Google Photos, and get search suggestions directly from the home screen.
12:35 pm (IST): Google will reportedly add new color styles to its Material You theming in Android 13. These include TONAL_SPOT, VIBRANT, EXPRESSIVE, SPRITZ, RAINBOW, and FRUIT_SALAD. More on that here.
Update 29 (March 25)
11:44 am (IST): Google has added a new tool in Android 13 DP 2 for limiting bandwidth. It will let developers limit the speed of any network that they want to evaluate and adjust the network to suit their working environment. More on that here.
Update 30 (March 31)
10:45 am (IST): Android 13 may introduce some changes in the screen saver. Esper’s Mishaal Rahman has managed to activate the hidden complication for a screen saver called ‘Colors’.
These complications can be activated by toggling the ‘Show additional information’ option in the screen saver settings. More on that here.
Update 31 (April 02)
11:34 am (IST): Google is working to deploy a method called multiple enabled profiles (MEP) in Android 13 that will allow multiple SIM profiles in a single eSIM. This will help eliminate the physical SIM card slot. More on that here.
Update 32 (April 04)
05:39 pm (IST): Google is reportedly bringing some performance improvements in DSU (Dynamic System Update). For those unaware, the DSU lets users install a GSI (Generic System Image) without unlocking the bootloader.
Update 33 (April 15)
04:32 pm (IST): Android 13 may significantly reduce the game loading time. According to Mishaal Rahman, the latest Android version adds setGameState to the GameManager API which allows games to communicate their current state to the system. More on that here.
Update 34 (April 16)
10:52 am (IST): Google may reportedly bring a significant upgrade to the split-screen mode with Android 13. It includes a new gesture for launching multiple instances of the same app. More on that here.
Update 35 (April 19)
09:34 am (IST): Google is reportedly working to merge the ‘Security’ and ‘Privacy’ settings into one page in Android 13 and it will be called as ‘Security & privacy’.
Update 36 (April 27)
09:35 am (IST): Google has released Android 13 beta 1 for eligible Pixel devices. According to Google’s official announcement, this beta build includes the following changes:
– Better error reporting in Keystore and KeyMint
– Anticipatory audio routing
– More granular media file permissions
However, it also brings many new changes and hidden features that Google has not mentioned in the official announcement such as resolution switching, global toggle for screen saver, Material You dynamic color styles in wallpaper & styles, and more.
Update 37 (April 28)
12:16 pm (IST): Android 13 beta 1 brings an improved and more capable QR code scanner. It is much faster and can detect, scan, and retrieve information from QR codes at an improved rate. More on that here.
Update 38 (April 29)
09:34 am (IST): Google I/O 2022 schedule has revealed that Android 13 will be getting a new predictive back navigation system.
01:05 pm (IST): Android 13 beta 1 has added new color and theming options for wallpaper and apps on Pixel devices. It offers 16 options for basic colors and 16 for wallpaper options. More on that here.
Update 39 (May 04)
05:56 pm (IST): Google has informed Pixel users that if they have already installed the May 2022 update, they can enroll in the beta program, but the OTA will be delayed.
This is because both Android 12 QPR3 beta 2 and Android 13 beta 1 builds are older than the May update. And if you still want to install the Android 13 beta, then you’ll have to wipe your device. Read the full statement here.
Update 40 (May 06)
12:23 pm (IST): In Android 13, Google will prevent apps downloaded from outside of the Play Store from accessing Accessibility APIs. More on that here.
Update 41 (May 9)
04:42 pm (IST): Google is now asking Pixel users for their feedback regarding the Android 13 beta 1. Interested users running beta 1 (TPB1.220310.029) can fill out the survey here.
Update 42 (May 20)
09:36 am (IST): To improve the battery life of a device, Android 13 will by default won’t allow apps to schedule exact alarms. And those apps will need to ask for permission from the users in order to use these APIs.
