Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakha City police are now focusing on recovery in online fraud cases and speeding up investigation process in all cybercrime cases.City police commissioner A Ravi Sankar said the focus is on reducing the increasing number of cyber cases in Visakhapatnam and surroundings.The commissioner said police are planning to form a team of cyber commandos, a group of engineering and computer graduates, from his force of more than 3,000.A total of 50 police personnel with engineering and computer science backgrounds would be selected as cyber commandos and would get training to investigate cybercrimes. Ravi Sankar has identified engineering and computer science graduates in the city police force.“We have listed out people with BTech, MTech, and MCA degrees. They will get training in the operation of various tools. We need to speed up investigations in cybercrimes as the number of cases is increasing,” the city police chief said.The commandos would get training from National Cyber Crime Coordination Center.The cybercrime police in Visakhapatnam received around 2,000 complaints this year. Cyber cops registered more than 350 FIRs of financial fraud cases this year by including the same nature of cases in one FIR.The number of financial fraud cases was 325 last year and 280 FIRs in 2021. Email, Facebook, and other social media abuse, OTP cases, ATM Skimming or spoofing cases, and loan, job fraud, and online fraud cases are rising.Apart from cyber commandos, the additional DG has planned for cyber warriors or cyber mitras or cyber volunteers to assist police in early detection of fraudsters or inform any suspected event in their vicinity.“These volunteers would inform police about cyberstalking, eve-teasing, and various issues and alert public also. We might recruit 500 cyber warriors who are interested to come forward to serve society,” he said.They would be selected by police once they register their names at police stations. They would be from IT companies, colleges, schools, private organizations, and rural areas. They would also create awareness among public by visiting schools, colleges, social gatherings, and other places.The city police commissioner said that law and order and situation in the city is under control but the concern is cybercrimes. The focus is on four issues–cybercrime, traffic, women’s protection, and narcotic drugs, he said.

Police driver held in paper leak case

A police driver has been arrested in connection with the Bihar Constable Recruitment Examination paper leak case. The driver, Jitendra Kumar, was allegedly linked to a gang that solved the paper for this year’s examination. This comes after two individuals, including an SSB jawan, were arrested earlier. Five people have been arrested so far, and raids are being conducted to apprehend others involved in the case. The examination, conducted by the Central Selection Board of Constables, was cancelled following allegations of paper leak.

Maharashtra-based health company on investor hunt loses Rs 2.5cr to cyber fraud

A health company in Mumbai lost Rs 2.25 crore in a phishing scam when an unknown person posed as a corporate communication manager and sent a link to the company’s proprietor. When the link was clicked, the money in the company’s crypto currency wallet was siphoned off. The police have formed a special team to investigate the case and have warned people about clicking on unknown links as they could lead to phishing websites designed to steal personal information. The police suspect that inferno drainer tools were used in the scam.
