Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 72 in Q1 2023, versus 87 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 42% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Thales filed the most cybersecurity patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q1 2023. The company filed 8 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 8 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Boeing with 7 cybersecurity patent filings, BAE Systems (6 filings), and Qualcomm (5 filings) in Q1 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by The US with a 14% share of total patent filings

The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q1 2023 was in The US with 14%, followed by China (11%) and South Korea (6%). The share represented by The US was 1% higher than the 13% share it accounted for in Q4 2022.
