MP: Give police more resources to deal with cybercrime | #cybercrime | #computerhacker

Oropouche East Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Roodal Moonilal is calling on the authorities to provide the police service with “greater resources” to deal with cybercrime.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, hours after reports circulated that the principal of the Barrackpore East Secondary School received a threat via email to murder teachers and students, Moonilal said the police commissioner must strengthen the Cyber and Social Media Unit to stamp out digital crimes.

He said: “The number of trained and experienced assigned officers must be increased to identify, collect and preserve online evidence through advanced investigations.”

The MP said in addition, the Ministry of Education “must assign counselors to provide diagnostic and prescriptive services” to affected teachers and students of the school.

“The Ministry of Education must also ensure that the School Support Services provide the necessary guidance, counseling and social services to alleviate the fears of the staff and students, in an expeditious manner,” Moonilal added.

According to Moonilal, the school community is understandably traumatised by the threat, therefore, “it is critical that the authorities act with haste and efficiency to prevent this planned crime, restore comfort and calm to the school, and send an effective warning to other such planned offenders.”
