While the US is known for its world-class facilities and high standard of living, it’s important to recognize that not everyone desires to move there. Although many individuals worldwide may be attracted to the US for these reasons, it’s crucial to avoid generalizing this preference to everyone. Molly—who goes by @strangecapers on TikTok—had a shocking story to share about why she and her family moved to England from the US.

In a video stitch on TikTok, Molly responded to user @americanbaron’s comment that leaving America might be the new American dream. Molly then revealed her surprising reason for wanting to depart from the United States. She says in the viral video: “We moved to England because my baby and I missed a mass shooting by five minutes. I was taking him into Manhattan and we got on the train and it stalled.”

“And the conductor came on and turned out some guy got on the train ahead and started raining bullets down and shot 30 people. Miraculously, nobody died. And if we’d been on time I would have been on that train with my infant. I’m not special. Americans deal with this all the time every day to like horrific ends,” says Molly in the video.

She continues, “I came home that day and I looked at my husband I said you have British citizenship and I think it’s time to leave. Now I learned when I was 12 that you know when Columbine happened that someone might want to come into my school and shoot me. I’ve known that every day since.”

“Truly my American dream is for my kid to not have to know that. I mean we left behind our families for this. We are incredibly privileged that we’re able to take this leap. But I just wanna say that leaving America is not for romance. It’s for survival,” she concludes.

Recent reports have highlighted that the United States is plagued with one of the highest rates of gun-related deaths globally, including mass shootings, which have been a persistent issue for over a decade. In fact, the US stands out as an outlier in terms of the sheer number of mass shootings. Shockingly, between 1998 and 2019, there were 101 incidents of mass shootings involving four or more people killed in the United States alone, according to Scary Mommy. This staggering figure accounts for nearly half of all mass shootings worldwide during that same period.

If kids aren’t worth it – the literal future of the country – then nothing is.” @the_uk_day tripper wrote, “American living in the UK. The feeling of safety is a level of peace I am immensely thankful for.”
