Kolkata Cybercrime News: Spear phishing: WhatsApp from boss? For once, don’t comply | Kolkata News | #cybercrime | #computerhacker

Kolkata: Be careful if you receive a message, suppesedly from your boss, but not from his usual number.
The past week since Durga Puja has seen multiple instances-four of which have been turned into FIRs by KP and Bidhannagar Police -where salaried people were conned with the ‘CEO Fraud‘. They were sent phishing links on their WhatsApp, camouflaged as being sent by their superiors, with the bosses’ photos accompanying the number.
An IT firm employee was on her way to office when she got such a message. “It looked like a message from my boss, the CEO travelling in the US. I was asked to buy gift cards online and pass on the codes to him. The message said my boss could not call me as he was busy at a meeting,” said the victim, who lost Rs 80,000 to fraudsters.
Cyber experts called it ‘CEO Fraud’. “Cyber crooks spoof company email accounts and WhatsApp numbers and impersonate senior executives to dupe an employee into executing unauthorized wire transfers, or sending out confidential tax information,” said a KP cyber cell officer.
The fraudsters, said experts, studied the victims’ online presence before striking. “This focused phishing is known as ‘Spear Phishing’. A spear phishing email or WhatsApp chat goes to one person or a small group using the same service. Some personal touch is added to the message, such as a known sender’s name,” said police.
