SINGAPORE — The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) cautioned recipients against clicking any links from a scam email on income tax returns.

In an advisory issued Thursday (12 May), the authority said it had been alerted of a scam email requesting recipients to click on links to make payment due to purported discrepancies in their tax returns.

The fake email, with sender TaxServices@secure-datalink.org, will claim that the recipient’s submitted tax return was incongruent with information received from third parties such as employers and financial institutions. The email will then instruct recipients to pay for the amount owed by clicking on a phishing link.

IRAS warned recipients not to click on the links or provide any personal, credit card or bank account details, or make payments to a third party bank account or follow any instructions by the sender.

Those affected should lodge police reports, it advised.

IRAS also cautioned users to be vigilant against emails, SMSes and WhatsApp messages which spoofed IRAS’ name, as the authority would not ask for personal or confidential details through such methods.

It added that taxpayers should only perform tax transactions via the myTax Portal which is accessed through Singpass.

Earlier this year, IRAS also warned members of the public to ignore letters purporting to be from IRAS and instructing recipients to pay off their outstanding tax defaults with a cash deposit to “reactivate” their bank accounts.
