EA Games offer an enticing library of AAA titles that millions of users play, but some users report problems while trying to install Origin on their system. Whenever they try to run the installation, the setup greets them with a 20:2 error code.

Why Does Origin Throw the 20:2 Error Code on Installation?

The Origin installer can encounter the 20:2 error code due to following reasons:

  1. The Origin doesn’t have elevated permissions for installation.
  2. The app is facing network problems such as disconnection, firewall blocking, or proxy use.
  3. An antivirus program is interfering with the installation.
  4. There is not enough space for Origin to install.

How to Fix Origin Failing to Install With the Error Code 20:2 Issue

Now, you know about the potential reasons for the error code. Here are some methods that you can use to fix the Origin installation problem.

1. Check Your Internet Connection

The Origin installer uses your internet connection to download its setup files for installation. If your computer doesn’t have a working internet connection, the installer won’t be able to download the required files. It will produce the 20:2 error and won’t install unless you reconnect to the internet.

So, check your internet connection by opening a web-based app or a website in a browser. Then rerun the Origin installer and check if the error code persists.

2. Run the Origin Installer With Administrator Privileges

Some apps require elevated permissions to work. If you are not using an administrator account on Windows, switch to one with admin rights. Or, right-click on the Origin installer file and select the “run as administrator” option. Then, try the installation again and see if it succeeds this time.

3. Ensure You Have Enough Disk Space for Origin

If you have inadequate space on the installation disk for Origin, it will fail to install and give you an error. So, you need to ensure that there is enough space on the drive to install Origin.

  1. Press Win + I to launch the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down the System settings section and click on the Storage setting.
  3. Click on the temporary files option. Scroll down and select the check boxes of the type of files you want to remove. You can skip the Downloads folder because it may have important files.
  4. Then go to the top of the page and click on the Remove files button.

4. Disable Windows Defender and Other Antivirus Programs

You need to go to the system tray icon and disable it. Windows Defender users need to do a bit extra effort to disable it.

Windows 10 and 11 now offer Tamper Protection. It re-enables real-time protection on your system even if you disable it. So, you need to disable Tamper Protection and then disable Real-time protection on your Windows PC.

To disable Windows Defender on your system, do as follows:

  1. Press Win + I to launch the Settings app. Now, navigate to the left-hand side menu and click on the Privacy & security option.
  2. Then navigate to Windows Security > Open Windows Security.
  3. Windows Security app will launch. Click on the Virus and threat protection option on the home page.
  4. Scroll down and click on the Manage settings options present under the Virus and threat protection settings section.
  5. Now, locate the Real-time protection option and click on the toggle to disable it.
  6. Then scroll down and find the Tamper Protection option. Click on the toggle to disable it as well.
  7. Now, exit the Windows security app. Relaunch the Origin app installer and check if it runs without an error.

5. Clear Origin’s Cache

If you had installed Origin before and then uninstalled it, there might still be residual files left over. These files can become corrupt over time, and when you try to run the installer, these corrupt files interfere with the installation process.

As such, deleting the Origin App Data folder can resolve the error. Don’t worry about breaking the app; when you run the installer, it will recreate these files again with fresh new files.

Here’s how to clear the Origin App Data folder:

  1. Press Win + I to launch the Run command box. Enter %AppData% and press the enter key.
  2. File explorer will take you to the AppData folder.
  3. Scroll down and locate the folder named Origin. Select it and press Shift + Delete.
  4. Restart your system. Once you’re back, try to install Origin and check if the issue still persists.

6. Use Safe Mode With Networking

If another program is interfering with the installation, running the Origin installer in safe mode can solve the issue. Since the installer requires the internet to download additional files, you must boot Windows in safe mode with networking.

Here’s how to boot into safe mode with networking on Windows:

  1. Press the Win key and click on the Power button. Press and hold the Shift key and click on Restart.
  2. Windows will restart, and you will enter the Troubleshoot mode for Windows OS.
  3. Click on the Troubleshoot option and then click on the Advanced options icon on the next page.
  4. Locate the Startup Settings option under advanced settings and click on it. Then click on the Restart button to access multiple startup modes.
  5. You will see nine options listed on the page. To boot Windows in Safe Mode with Networking enabled, press the F5 key.
  6. Windows will restart and then boot into safe mode with networking.
  7. Now, go to the Origin installer file location and run it with elevated permissions. Check if the error code still pops up.

7. Try the Origin’s Non-Thin Client

The installer available on the Origin site requires an internet connection to download more files. But there is a non-thin client version of the Origin installer also available. It is bigger in file size, but it doesn’t need to download extra files as a result. Some Origin users say that while installing the non-thin Origin client, they didn’t run into the error code.

8. Disable Any VPNs or Proxy Servers

EA’s servers can be harsh on VPN connections and proxy servers. If you are running any of these while running the installer, disabling them can resolve the issue. You can turn off the VPN by terminating the connection using the app or closing the app until the installation completes.

To disable a proxy server on your system, do as follows:
