Juneau, Alaska (KINY) – The U. S. Marshal’s Service and Alaska State Troopers report a telephone scam involving a fraudulent caller contacting convicted sex offenders and alleging they are in violation of their sex offender registration requirements and demanding payment to avoid being arrested.

A release says there have been recently reported attempts of a caller identifying themselves as U. S. Marshals and/or Alaska State Troopers. The scammer informs the potential victims that warrants would be issued for them if they did not pay a performance bond.

The release says law enforcement does not seek payment of fines or fees via the telephone for individuals with outstanding arrest warrants or for non-compliant sex offenders.

The authorities urge individuals not to divulge personal or financial information to unknown callers.

Victims of fraud can report the incident through the FBI’s Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov/  In addition, business or phone scams can be reported online to the Federal Trade Commission at  https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
