Screenshots with personal information and protected health information were leaked on the dark web after a cyber-attack that hit UnitedHealth business Change Healthcare in February, according to a release. UnitedHealth adds that 22 screenshots were posted for a week on the dark web and that no further publications have been found. No specific data has been released on those who may have been impacted by the cyberattack. Although, UnitedHealth says a substantial portion of people in America may have been impacted. CEO of Cyber Defense Media Group and publisher of Cyber Defense Magazine Gary Miliefsky says cybercriminals have become an increasing threat. “Cybercrime is nearing a trillion and growing,” Miliefsky said. “So the cyber criminals are well-armed, with amazing technology to break in and steal and cover their tracks.”Miliefsky adds that the American healthcare industry is at a disadvantage when protecting itself from cybercriminals. “They’re understaffed, overworked, and healthcare is the soft underbelly for cybercrime today,” he said. UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty said in a statement: “We know this attack has caused concern and been disruptive for consumers and providers and we are committed to doing everything possible to help and provide support to anyone who may need it.”Miliefsky says that health records are valuable on the dark web and recommends visiting websites such as amibreached.com to track leaked data on the dark web, and hhs.gov for information on data protection.
