Don’t be taken in by scam text factories, warns Bank of Ireland | Ireland | #phishing | #scams | #hacking | #aihp


We have all had dodgy-looking emails land in our inbox — some with “scam” written all over them, others a bit more cleverly wrought. Yet since the pandemic fraudsters have been shifting their attention to SMS, or mobile text, scams, known as smishing.

It seems that consumers are not as adept at spotting these as they are when it comes to similar attempts by email. Just last month Bank of Ireland issued a warning about what it called a “new wave” of fraudulent text messages. According to the bank, the number of smishing cases it detected had increased by about 50 per cent over the space of just one month recently.

Most of this uptick has taken the form of fake “package delivery” text messages
