Wagner College is proud to participate in Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an annual initiative designed to promote the importance of cybersecurity and empower individuals and organizations to stay safe online. This campaign, “Protect, Educate, Secure, Thrive,” focuses on providing practical tips to enhance cybersecurity awareness and protect against cyber threats.
Throughout the month of October, the Wagner College Information Technology department will share resources and tips to ensure you stay protected when using technology whenever and however you connect.
Protect Your Digital World | Fortify Your Defenses
Tip 1: Strengthen Your Passwords
It is vital to ensure you use strong and unique passwords. A strong password is your first line of defense. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols, and never reuse passwords.
Tip 2: Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a critical security measure that adds an extra layer of protection to various online accounts and systems. Activate it wherever you can for an added shield against unauthorized access. 2FA significantly improves the security of your accounts by requiring two separate methods of verification before granting access. Typically, this involves something you know (like a password) and something you have (like a mobile device). Even if an attacker knows your password, they would still need the second factor to gain access. It’s a relatively simple and effective way to enhance security, and it is widely recommended for anyone who values the security of their online accounts and personal information.
The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) offers a great resource for ways to create a strong password and introduces the use of a password manager guide, which creates, stores and fills passwords for you automatically. Then, we each only have to remember one strong password—for the password manager itself.
