Cybercrime: 2 held for posing as CBI, ED officials | Goa News | #cybercrime | #computerhacker


Panaji: Cybercrime police on Friday arrested two persons for allegedly impersonating as CBI and ED officials from Rajkot, Gujarat in connection with a cyber fraud case.

Superintendent of police (SP) cyber crime, Rahul Gupta said that the arrested persons have been identified as Ravindra Nandaniya and Vimal Der, both residents of Rajkot.

“Pertinently, both the accused received Rs 19 lakh as self-cheques withdrawals of part amount of the fraud money. The accused were arrested after painstaking efforts in Upleta, Rajkot. Several items of incriminating material such as smartphones and bank passbooks have been recovered from their possession,” Gupta said.

Gupta said that the modus operandi of the accused is that the cyber fraudsters would usually impersonate as govt officials from agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), CBI, and state police crime branches.

“They accuse victims of serious crimes such as money laundering and narcotics smuggling, often serving fake legal notices through fraudulent websites to create urgency and fear,” Gupta said.

Gupta said that the scammers would go to the extent of conducting video calls on platforms like Skype, dressed in khaki uniforms, to further intimidate victims.

“Under duress, the victims are coerced into sharing personal information and transferring significant sums of money to fraudulent accounts,” he said.

Goa police have informed the public that govt and law enforcement agencies communicate only through post or physical means. Additionally, one should always approach local police for clarification in case of such notices or accusations by law enforcement authorities. As soon as one realises that they are being defrauded, they should immediately contact cyber cell, police said.
