Cyber Crime, Money Transfer, Mobile Phone, Shop Owners, Hotel Owners: Semi-literate Man Effectuates Dozens Of Cyber Fraud Cases | Rajkot News | #cybercrime | #computerhacker

Rajkot: A 36-year-old man who didn’t study beyond Class 3 pulls of at least two dozen cyber fraud cases successfully in Devbhumi Dwarka district. It further came to light during police investigation that the accused, identified as Shabbirhussain Bhagad, employed a different modus operandi using bank accounts of money transfer agencies to commit the frauds.
According to cyber crime police station police inspector A Y Baloch, the police came to know about Bhagad while probing a Rs 48,000 cyber fraud complaint lodged by Sukhdevsinh Jadeja in Salaya. He said that his team zeroed in on Bhagad after technical surveillance. Later it was revealed that Bhagad was lodged in Jamnagar jail in connection with a cheating case.
“During interrogation, Bhagad, a semi-literate confessed that he was involved in at least 24 cyber crime fraud cases in the past two years. He was earlier arrested in 2017 in connection with a rape case and later was released on bail,” said Baloch.
He added that Bhagad had a unique modus operandi as he involved employees of money transfer agencies and used the firm’s bank account to transfer the duped amounts.
Explaining Bhagad’s modus operandi, Baloch said that the accused would borrow mobile phone of a victim under the pretext of making an urgent call. While the phone was in his hands, Bhagad would copy the contact of the victim. Later, he would call the contacts and seek money from them saying that the phone owner (who was known to the contact) was in need of money.
Bhagad would also ask the contacts to transfer money to the QR code of the money transfer agency that he would send them. Once the money was transferred, the money transfer agency employee would take a cut and give the remaining amount to Bhagad.
Baloch said Bhagad also cheated shop and hotel owners. For this, he would contact the victim and place a purchase order and negotiate on the price. Once the price was fixed he would send a copy of a cheque and bank deposit slip on WhatsApp. The amount on the cheque would be higher than what was decided. Bhagad would then request the shop owner to return the excess amount.
