Private boys’ school Cranbrook has announced a review into the handling of serious child safety concerns raised over the past 14 years after a scandal forced headmaster Nicholas Sampson to resign from his $1 million-plus job last week.

The “external review” will also examine the school’s policies concerning sexual misconduct, bullying and discrimination while foreshadowing the creation of a process for staff and students to lodge complaints and grievances.

Sampson resigned after the school’s governing council discovered he knew about claims a serving teacher had sent sexually explicit emails in 2014 to a former female student from another school.

On Monday morning, president of the school’s governing council, Geoff Lovell, said the review would look at the handling of any serious child safety matters dating to 2010 or earlier if required.

“The school council understands that there is significant work required to maintain the confidence of the school community,” Lovell said.

The school would also establish “an external avenue for people to report serious concerns” while the policies and procedures relating to whistleblowing and workplace health and safety would also be reviewed.

Nicholas Sampson sensationally resigned as Cranbrook headmaster after a tumultuous week for the school.

“Our priority is to ensure that students experience minimal disruption and that our staff are fully supported,” Lovell said.

“The school council believes strongly in the quality and integrity of Cranbrook’s educational programs and the excellence and commitment of its staff.”
