COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city cybercrime police on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old man for creating fake Instagram profiles and uploading obscene photos and videos of his relative women.
The arrested man has been identified as R Sathish of Thiruneelakandapuram in Tirupur city. He completed a diploma course and is doing flex designing in Tirupur city.
A 24-year-old woman from P N Pudur in Coimbatore city, who is working in the IT sector, lodged a complaint with the city cybercrime police on February 7, 2023 stating that her morphed photos were uploaded on a fake Instagram profile by an unidentified person and her mobile number was also shared in the fake profile. She used to receive phone calls from various people.
Based on her complaint, the cybercrime police registered a case against an unidentified person under sections 385, 506 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code, sections 66 C and 67 of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act 2008 and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
Investigations revealed that the unidentified person had created a temporary email address and an Instagram profile in the woman’s name. He also uploaded her morphed obscene photos and provided her contact number on social media. The police traced the Internet Protocol (IP) address and arrested Sathish on Wednesday.
The police said the woman was a close relative of the arrested man who only took the woman to the cybercrime police station to lodge a complaint. Sathish was allegedly disrespected by his relatives. So, he decided to take revenge and created at least nine fake Instagram profiles and posted his relatives’ obscene photographs and videos.
He was produced before a judicial magistrate on Wednesday evening and was remanded in judicial custody. He was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
