Austin Peay State University hit by ransomware attack | #malware | #ransomware | #hacking | #aihp

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Middle Tennessee university was reportedly the victim of a cyberattack Wednesday afternoon.

Austin Peay State University released an alert through its Twitter account Wednesday, saying the campus was under a ransomware attack.

“Someone started knocking on the door several times, and my professor ignored it at first, but then he came in and he was frantically asking if the computers were offline to make sure it wasn’t affected by the ransomware attack,” said Shauna Caddell, a Senior at Austin Peay.

The university advised everyone connected to the APSU network to disconnect immediately and shut down all computers.

“The girls beside me were freaking out, saying ‘what do we do? Do we shut our wifi off, do we just need to leave? We don’t know what to do,’ and so I was worried,” said Shelbee Davis, a freshman at Austin Peay.

A ransomware attack is malware that demands a ransom to avoid releasing a user’s private information to the public.

“I definitely know with us being connected as we are with everything, it’s something that can affect us all, but I didn’t really think that somebody would target a campus just because we’re not doing anything, we’re just trying to get our work done,” Caddell explained.

Late Wednesday night, the university announced the school will be open on Thursday, but computer labs will not be open. Employees are asked to not use work computers on campus or at home.

The university IT staff is investigating the threat at this time, and they believe the threat has been contained.
